Water Skiing Event – October 27, 1985

Blue & Gold Fleet carries more than 4 million passengers each year – sometimes with water skiers in tow.   A few decades back, Blue & Gold decided to take a turn at breaking the world record for towing water skiers!

A press event, sponsored by Budweiser, was staged on the bay. The skiers glided for one nautical mile behind the GOLD RUSH, one of the Blue & Gold Fleet vessels. Unfortunately, only 43 skiers actually got up on their skis, but it was an exciting event for the press to cover and a fun event for the company.

Blue & Gold’s President, Roger Murphy, and the entire team, did not want to admit defeat and vowed to challenge the record again in the Spring. Although another attempt at the world record has not happened yet, the water ski event lives on at Blue & Gold, especially for Port Engineer, John Mcllroy.  “This was one of the most fun memories,” says Mcllroy, a 35-year employee who started as a deckhand.  “It’s always been a family atmosphere.  We all genuinely care about each other,” adds Mcllroy, “and I still thoroughly enjoy working here at Blue & Gold every day!”
