In The Beginning - May 27, 1979 - Blue & Gold Fleet

In The Beginning – May 27, 1979

Roger Murphy, along with Warren Simmons, founded Blue & Gold Fleet at PIER 39 on May 27, 1979.  The original boats, OSKI, GOLDEN BEAR and OLD BLUE, started sailing underneath the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, around Alcatraz Island and cruising the historic San Francisco Waterfront.  The Bay Cruise tours were as popular then as they are today.

In recognition of our 40 years on the Bay, we would like to thank Matt Nichols of the Nichols Brothers from Whidbey Island, Washington, who have been constructing Blue & Gold’s vessels for as long as we’ve been in business.

Roger Murphy, Founder and President of Blue & Gold, was a dynamic, knowledgeable and good-hearted man. Blue & Gold was a family run business from day one.

It was all hands-on-deck for the Murphy family.  Roger’s daughter Kelly (O’Donnell), sons Steve, Skip, Pat and Mike, as well as nieces and nephews all played a part in launching Blue & Gold Fleet.  Roger treated his employees as family members, taking a personal interest in their careers and personal lives.  Roger went the extra mile to make sure their hard work was rewarded with educational and career opportunities, and encouraged his deckhands to take the Coast Guard exam so they could become Captains.

Murphy’s vision on transportation and ferries now serves an ever-expanding Bay Area commute. His foresight on visitor and industry trends has kept the company at the top of our game.

This is how Blue & Gold Fleet began and how we will continue to grow.
