Muir Woods is home to the tallest and oldest Redwood Trees in existence. Some are 1,000+ years old.
Muir Woods was declared a National Monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt and named for conservationist and Sierra Club Founder John Muir. The 560-acre park contains the only large stand of ancient redwoods in the Bay Area. Just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
