Oakland & Alameda
At the turn of the century, the Oakland waterfront was bustling with seafood and produce vendors, restaurants and saloons. Author Jack London, drawing much of his material from his experiences here, adopted this area as his stomping ground. Today, the waterfront area has retained much of its charm as a popular shopping, dining and theatre venue. Explore the many unique shops at the Square, or dine alfresco at several of its Bay front restaurants. Relive the turn of the century by visiting Jack London Museum, where you'll find vintage photographs, newspapers and other period memorabilia. On Sundays you'll find the Farmer's Market, open year-round, where the freshest produce, flowers and specialty foods are yours for the choosing. Across the estuary, you'll find Alameda's Main Street, home to a unique and historic shopping district. Tree-lined streets, enchanting Victorian homes, parks and miles of bike trails make Alameda a can't-miss island community.
